Be Like Water: Dragon Tao Kung Fu Takes Out the Competition
2020 has not been off to the best start by any stretch. Here at BizCover, we saw our customers struggling to keep their doors open and did what we could to help defer their insurance payments, keep their livelihoods and their small businesses protected during the pandemic. We are also continued our long-running small business grant competition, BizGiver.
Each quarter, we give one lucky small business owner a $2,000 grant to go towards purchasing a good or service that they can use to help grow their business.
We received a huge number of entries for this round and it was extremely difficult to pick a winner.
After careful deliberation, Scott Smith, the owner of Dragon Tao Kung Fu, was chosen as the winner of the 42nd BizGiver grant.
Scott has been running Dragon Tao Kung Fu, his Mona Vale based martial arts school, for roughly 10 years. We had a chat to him about what being a small business owner means to him and how winning the grant will help his business.
What is your business best known for?
Dragon Tao Kung Fu is a martial arts school that teaches adults and children’s classes, as well as women’s self-defence. We teach Wing Chun Kung Fu, which was the style that was made famous by Bruce Lee.
Why did you start your business?
I started my business because martial arts had been my passion since I was a child. My dream job was to run a martial arts school. One day I gave up my career, and took a risk, to start up my Kung Fu school. A lot of hard work later and I am still going.
Why did you enter the BizGiver competition? What did you wish for?
I entered because I had borrowed a high-quality camera to run online classes during the current crisis, and therefore keep my business alive. The online lessons proved popular and will now be a permanent part of the business. This was in part due to the high quality. Unfortunately, I now have to return the camera and couldn’t afford the cost for a new one.
What does being a small business owner mean to you?
Being a small business owner is fantastic. Of course, it is a lot harder than people may realise but the reward for all that hard work is worth it. You feel a personal level of accomplishment every time you grow or succeed.
How will winning this prize help your business?
This will help my business immensely. I will be able to continue the online lessons, as we now have some remote students that can’t do it any other way, as well as some students who can’t risk coming to physical classes yet. It will also help with video and photography to grow further.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? What are your growth goals?
I can see the business expanding locally, as well as being able to support students from around the world due to the high-quality online classes.
What are the biggest challenges your business faces? Will winning the award help?
The biggest challenge with expanding online is that there is now a lot more competition. Having the high-quality camera will definitely help to stand out. It will also help with the marketing.
What have been your biggest achievements?
I started the business with no students and just took the plunge. For a few years I had to work second jobs as my business cost more to run then it was making. As the student base grew this eventually changed. My biggest achievement was when I could finally run the business as a standalone fulltime job. I reached my dream.
